The work of a translator is daunting. The compromise between accuracy, style and intent is never ending. And to up the game, there are just layers of references that cannot simply be translated. Your annotation will bring so much more depth to the enjoyment of this novel.
The richness of Chinese cultural and literary history cannot be overstated. There is such a wealth of references that an author can draw from to color her writing. And there can be such pleasure for the reader to find the subliminal meaning behind each turn of phrase.
