Faraway Wanderers - Chapter 11

The chapters set in the cavern have been adapted to a different setting in the web-series (around episode 5). It's fun to see the references.

Thanks Emma P for proofreading!

Notes

1. The original saying is "his overfull belly led him to do unnecessary actions". It reflects how, in the Chinese culture, being well nourished meant being rich enough to have spare time.

2. 火折子: a kind of primitive portable lighter/torch/fire source. It's a small bamboo tube with inflammable material/kindling within it (paper, cotton, etc.). The kindling is ignited and kept in a state of low combustion with the tube (that is pierced with a tiny hole) closed. When a source of fire is needed, all the user has to do is to open the tube: contact with oxygen turns low combustion into a flame.

3. 谛听: mythical creature from Buddhist belief. Diting is the mount of Bodhisattva Kṣitigarbha who took the vow not to become a Buddha before hell is emptied and is therefore regarded as the bodhisattva of hell-dwellers.

4. Polite turn of phrases, implying that WKX won't die too soon.

5. "Being afraid of Dengtu Zi" (登徒子) in the original. Dengtu Zi is a character from a story about sexually obsessed people.

6. 庐山真面目 lit. "the real face of Lushan Mountain" from a famous quote by Su Shi.

7. lit. "martial forest" or the whole of martial arts social circles.
