Faraway Wanderers - Chapter 13

Slowly getting there. ZZS is totally a flirt, though.

Thank you Emma P for proofreading!

Notes

1. 南疆, the southern border of the country, usually referring to south Xinjiang. The alchemist/witch doctor being held hostage meant he is probably the heir to a vassal/rebellious tribe/kingdom.

2. 中原 (Zhongyuan), middle and lower reaches of China. Considered the birthplace of the Chinese civilization. Here it is used to contrast with Nanjiang.

3. 奇门遁甲 (Qimen Dunjia), ancient divination method based on astronomical observation still used nowadays. Believed to have been used by Liu Bei at the Battle of Red Cliffs to secure a victory.

4. 三奇、八门、六甲 or "three qi, eight men, six jia" from "Qi men Dunjia". Elements used in the above-described divination technique.

5. 花魁 translated literally. In context, refers to the most beautiful/popular prostitute of a time. Prostitutes generally worked in brothels, so the competition was fierce. Comparably to geisha, they also had a certain amount of celebrity within some circles. Not a direct equivalent of the Japanese oiran that share the same kanji.

6. Reflect Chinese folk beliefs on reincarnation with Buddhism influence. Accumulated good karma influence the quality of the next life.

7. Old and famous Buddhist saying. Refers to the tale of a butcher who attained awakening on the spot when he received the scriptures from a disciple of Buddha. Means that it's never too late to repent.
