Notes

1. Telling someone they are a turtle or tortoise is an insult, depending on the context it has a pejorative sexual connotation.

2. 洞庭 (lit. “cave hall”) place name in Hunan.

3. The “Three-Legged Money Toad” is a common figurine believed to bring fortune. Originates from the legend of the immortal Liu Haichan who had a three-legged toad that spat gold/pearl from its mouth.

4. From 近朱者赤,近墨者黑 or “Those who handle cinnabar get stained red, those who handle ink get stained black”. I.e. being influenced by environment/frequentations.

5. From Chinese astrological signs. Chicken is also someone who is petty.

6. Please enjoy the sleeve action. Esp. if you consider that they are both "sleeve-cutters" competing with each other. This is so funny.

7. 关门弟子 lit. “closed-door disciple”. Most junior disciple in rank, but also usually the most favoured by the shifu.

8. 清风剑派 lit. “Pure Wind Sword School”.

9. Shishu or co-disciple or one’s shifu. See previous note.

10. 山河令 lit. “command token of the mountains and rivers”. 山河令 is the Chinese title to the web-series Word of Honor. Translated as Honour’s Token in, ahem, the honour of the show.
